Problem realization Essay
One issue I have had in the ongoing past has been worried about settling on the choice on where to seek after my advanced education. Getting a comprehension of the issue included not simply understanding that I needed to go to school, yet additionally seeing how my evaluations and encounters may help me in (or banning me from) going to sure of the better universities. On one level, the issue could be recognized inside myself, as I was glad to have arrived at my senior year of secondary school and was not especially anxious to set out on an additional four years of studies. Be that as it may, as I would not like to enter the working scene with just a secondary school certificate, the issue turned into an inward battle whose result relied upon an investigation of the advantages and disadvantages of setting off for college (Dombroski, 2000). The issue included the acknowledgment that my future relied upon the decision I would make concerning school. Data gathering turned into a huge piece of what supported my comprehension of the issue. On one level, data gathering was a straightforward as keeping my eyes and ears open, as educators and guardians were resolved to letting me understand how urgent the choice to head off to college was. Different types of data gathering included review pamphlets, visiting grounds and perusing the sites of colleges that offered investigations in the controls I was keen on. It likewise included the comprehension of how my money related status would likewise influence my capacity to go to schools, regardless of whether I could without much of a stretch get into them. Another significant part of the data gathering, hence, included investigation into grant openings, understudy credits, and a checking of the kinds of employments into which I could possibly enter after accomplishing a degree in my different favored regions. After perusing and exploring all the zones referenced over, the arrangement turned out to be clear. School was a need, and with cautious arranging it was a suitable decision (Dombroski, 2000). As the past parts of my basic contemplating school happened in the late spring before my senior year in secondary school, I found that there were as yet a couple of things I could do to mitigate a portion of the weights of getting into school. I had the option to execute a progressively organized investigation plan, as I understood that improved evaluations would not just assist me with getting more acknowledgments into my favored universities, however they would likewise give me a superior possibility of getting grants. Another part of the arrangement included taking classes that would consider a portion of the requirements of the school classes I planned to take. I was likewise ready to select myself in a couple of all the more extra curricular exercises, so as to show up increasingly alluring to entrance advisory boards at the colleges that intrigued me. Being in school presently has allowed me the chance to assess how compelling my senior-year plan was. After thinking about it, I mirror that the arrangement was a fairly compelling one. I had the option to get into a decent school that offers the zone of study wherein I am intrigued. Since I arranged ahead of time to take classes that would consider requirements to my planned significant courses, I was likewise ready to join up with classes that were adequately best in class so as to permit me to graduate on schedule. While I couldn't accumulate full grants from the school to help my investigations, my evaluations helped me to get some monetary help that has decreased the measure of cash I have needed to acquire for school. Thusly, while that part of the arrangement didn't work 100%, the choice to improve my evaluations is no uncertainty still one that allowed me fiscal returns. At last, my choice to take a crack at an assortment of extra-curricular exercises additionally shows up, everything considered, to have been a decent choice. As I was mindful so as not to over-take a crack at these exercises, my association in them was adequately great without selling out any proof of over-responsibility. Along these lines, I accept that choice was likewise one that has empowered me to be on this way to progress. Moreover, my inclusion in such exercises, alongside my assurance to do well scholastically in my last year of secondary school, showed me some significant time the executives aptitudes that have been exceptionally helpful during my time in school (Dodd and Sundheim, 2005). Inventiveness is most generally used in adjusting my work, exercises and public activity with the enormous course-outstanding burden I have every semester. Despite the fact that I have excellent authoritative abilities, I do see myself as having resistance for chaos and turmoil somewhat. The kind of untidiness to which I allude is permitting some measure of non-consistency in my time table. In this manner, while a lot of my day is booked and arranged out, (for example, classes, work time, and some investigation time) a ton of my day is still left uncertain. In this manner, I settle on choices on what to do at those occasions spontaneously instead of early. On a couple of events this has left me with the issue of picking among rest and reading for a test. The way that I have decided to forego rest shows my readiness to face challenges in the territory of lack of sleep and not with my evaluations (Dodd and Sundheim, 2005). Psychological barriers are primarily an issue for me where it comes to troublesome logical, (for example, numerical) errand and classes. I have not had especially karma in performing admirably in such classesââ¬however, taking whatever classes has been fundamental in the quest for my degree. So as to stay away from these inabilities to think straight I attempt to examine strategies for envisioning the theoretical, scientific thoughts that are advanced in such errands. I utilize the web and different assets to discover where individuals have prevailing with regards to making such edited compositions concrete. This permits me to loosen up more when such subjects are suggested. My strategy for conceptualizing happens to happen in close connection to my endeavors to be open to my faculties. At the point when confronted with the issue named above of adjusting examining/schoolwork with public activity, not exclusively to I focus on my wants to go out and mingle, yet additionally to the pestering feeling of having a heap of work that needs consideration. Subsequently, I focus not exclusively to my feeling of experience and want for satisfaction, yet in addition my good judgment that discloses to me how much work I can possibly deal with in the measure of time I have allocated (Dodd and Sundheim, 2005). Prophecy and Suicide in Oedipus Rex - 682 Words
Galileo Galilei is a man whose unwavering pursuit of the truth in a time of dogmatism and theocratic conformity, has cemented his legacy for over four centuries. His discoveries have been a stellar paradigm for todayââ¬â¢s scientific community. When he published Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems, proclaiming heliocentrism - Copernicusââ¬â¢ theory that the planets revolved around a stationary sun - was the undisputed truth, he was tried by the Inquisition, which found him vehemently suspect of heresy. He was sentenced to house arrest ââ¬Ëunto deathââ¬â¢. Though the veracity of his claims was later confirmed, this demonstrates that knowledge is a burden, for Galileoââ¬â¢s insight led to his persecution. As Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, ââ¬Å"Knowledge is knowing that we cannot know.â⬠This theory also applies to the case of Oedipus Rex, where his knowledge of the oracle proves hazardous instead of rewarding. Similar to Galileo, though Oedipusââ¬â¢ insight is true, it encumbers the bearer. Oedipusââ¬â¢ knowledge of the prophecy is more so a burden than a benefit, because it led to his wife, Jocastaââ¬â¢s suicide and his all-consuming guilt. Oedipus is the cause, albeit indirectly, of Jocastaââ¬â¢s death. He did not obey her warning. She knew the nature of their incestuous relationship and exhorted him against speaking to the messenger and shepherd; the truth would ultimately threaten their marriage. Roman Emperor Theodosius the Great
Under Emperor Valentinian I (r. 364-375), army officer Flavius Theodosius was stripped of command and exiled to Cauca, Spain, where he had been born in about 346. Despite such inauspicious beginnings, Theodosius, with his 8-year-old son installedà in nameà as ruler of the Western Empire, became the last emperor to rule theà entire Roman Empireà in fact. Probably two to three years after Valentinian exiled Theodosius (and executed his father), Rome needed Theodosius again. The empire was a formidable power at this time. Thus it was against all odds that on August 9, 378 the Visigoths trounced theà Eastern Empireà and killed its emperor (Valens [r. A.D. 364-378]) at the momentousà Battle of Adrianople. Although it took a while for the after-effects to play out, this defeat is a major event to look at when tracing theà fall of the Roman Empire. With the eastern emperor dead, his nephew, the western Emperor Gratian, needed to reclaim command ofà Constantinopleà and the rest of the eastern part of the empire. To do so he sent in his best generalââ¬âthe formerly-exiled Flavius Theodosius. Dates: A.D. c. 346-395; (r. A.D. 379-395)Place of Birth: Cauca, in Hispania [see sec. Bd on Map]Parents: Theodosius the Elder and Thermantia Wives: Aelia Flavia Flaccilla;Galla Children: Arcadius (made Augustus on 19 January 383), Honorius (made Augustus on 23 January 393), and Pulcheria;Gratian and Galla Placidia(by adoption) Serena, his niece Claim to Fame: The last ruler of the entire Roman Empire; effectively put an end to pagan practices. Theodosius Hazardous Rise to Power Theodosius own father had been a senior military officer in the Western Empire. Emperor Valentinian had honored him by appointing him magister equitum praesentalis Master of the Horse in the Presence of the Emperor (Ammianus Marcellinus 28.3.9) in 368 and then executed him in early 375 for unclear reasons. Perhaps Theodosius father was executed for trying to intercede on behalf of his son. At about the time Emperor Valentinian executed his father, Theodosius went into retirement in Spain. It was only after Valentinians death (November 17, 375) that Theodosius regained his commission. Theodosius obtained the rank of the magister militum per Illyricum Master of the Soldiers for the Prefecture of Illyricum in 376, which he kept until January 379 when Emperor Gratian appointed him co-Augustus to replace Emperor Valens. Gratian may have been coerced into making the appointment. Barbarian Recruits The Goths and their allies were ravaging not only Thrace but also Macedonia and Dacia. It was the eastern emperor, Theodosius job to suppress them while the western emperor, Gratian attended to matters in Gaul. Although Emperor Gratian provided the Eastern Empire with some troops, Emperor Theodosius needed more -- because of the devastation that had been caused by the Battle at Adrianople. So he recruited troops from among the barbarians. In an only partially successful attempt to stave off barbarian defection, Emperor Theodosius made a trade: he sent some of his new, questionable recruits to Egypt to be exchanged for presumed-loyal Roman soldiers. In 382 Emperor Theodosius and the Goths reached an agreement: Emperor Theodosius permitted the Visigoths to retain some autonomy while living in Thrace, and many of the Goths enlisted in the imperial army, and especially the cavalry, which had proved to be one of the Roman weaknesses at Adrianople. The Emperors Their Domains From Julian to Theodosius Sons. (Simplified) NB: Valeo is the Latin verb to be strong. It was a popular base for mens names in the Roman Empire. Valentinian was the name of 2 Roman emperors during the lifetime of Theodosius, and Valens was that of a third. Julian Jovian (West) (East) Valentinian I / Gratian Valens Gratian / Valentinian II Theodosius Honorius Theodosius / Arcadius Maximus Emperor In January of 383, Emperor Theodosius named his young son Arcadius successor. Maximus, a general who had served with Theodosius father and may have been a blood relative, may have hoped to be named, instead. That year Maximus soldiers proclaimed him emperor. With these approving troops, Maximus entered Gaul to face Emperor Gratian. The latter was betrayed by his own troops and killed in Lyons by Maximus Gothic magister equitum. Maximus was preparing to advance on Rome when Emperor Gratians brother, Valentinian II, sent a force to meet him. Maximus agreed to accept Valentinian II as ruler of part of the Western Empire, in 384, but in 387 he advanced against him. This time Valentinian II fled to the East, to Emperor Theodosius. Theodosius took Valentinian II into protection. Then he led his army to fight against Maximus in Illyricum, at Emona, Siscia, and Poetovio [see map]. Despite many Gothic troops defecting to Maximus side, Maximus was captured and executed at Aquileia on August 28 , 388. (Valentinian II, Theodosius brother-in-law through his second marriage, was killed or committed suicide in May of 392.) One of the defecting Gothic leaders was Alaric, who fought for Emperor Theodosius in 394 against Eugenius, another pretender to the throne -- which he lost in the civil war battle on the river Frigidus in September -- and then against Emperor Theodosius son, but is best known for sacking Rome. Stilicho From the time of Emperor Jovian (377), there had been a Roman treaty with the Persians, but there were skirmishes along the borders. In 387, Emperor Theodosius magister peditum praesentalis, Richomer, put an end to these. Conflict over Armenia picked up again, until another of Emperor Theodosius officials, his magister militum per Orientem, Stilicho, arranged a settlement. Stilicho was to become a major figure in Roman history of the period. In an effort to tie Stilicho to his family and presumably strengthen the claim of Emperor Theodosius son Arcadius, Emperor Theodosius married his niece and adoptive daughter to Stilicho. Emperor Theodosius appointed Stilicho regent over his younger son Honorius and possibly (as Stilicho claimed), over Arcadius, as well. Theodosius on Religion Emperor Theodosius had been tolerant of most pagan practices, but then in 391 he sanctioned the destruction of the Serapeum at Alexandria, enacted laws against pagan practices, and put an end to the Olympic games.à He is also credited with putting an end to the power of the Arian and Manichean heresies in Constantinople while establishing Catholicism as the state religion. Kevin was angry and ended the party. Ashley was bringing a purse to school, she carried it with her everywhere, even the washroom. The Snob Squad thinks she kept the money in there. Meanwhile, Lydia was acting weird as she was getting frustrated easily. Concluding Comments: In my opinion, I think that Lydia should have solved the problem in another way. Instead of trying to take revenge by stealing, she should have talked about it to a teacher, her parents or even the principal himself to solve the problem. By stealing, she had caused Max to receive a three-week suspension, Jenny and Kevin to have a miscommunication and Ashleyââ¬â¢s dark secrets to be revealed. All in all, we need to be honest and think carefully before we do something, so that in the end, hopefully no one get affected. Ratings: 4/5

Machiavelli Essays (713 words) - Machiavellianism,
Machiavelli Machiavelli and the President Lately, the president of the United States Bill Clinton, has pursued some policies that have been very unpopular not only with the general public but the electorate as well. Besides the whole Monica ordeal he feels that these unpopular policies will effect the results of the next election. The presidential advisors have formulated countless plans but no plan has seemed to work. One idea would be to leave the unpopular policies as they are because of the president and advisors belief that they are the best for the country. Another option would be to just present the unpopular policies in a new way to maybe change public opinion on them. Still another would be to just ignore the policies and concentrate on the election. No matter what option , if any, should be chosen one must be thought up quick and it must not only address the problem but solve it and fast. Since I have recently learned about Machiavelli and his work titled The Prince I feel his opinions would help to influence some decisions for the president and his advisors. A first and very important view of Machiavelli would be his view of the prince and his advisors. "It is an infallible rule that a prince who is not wise himself cannot be well advised."(p.117) As it is up to the prince to be well advised it is also up to the president to be well advised as well. The president's advisors, as well as the president, are not sure what actions to take, which in Machiavelli's view would not be a good characteristic of a leader and as a result would not help gain friendship of the people. Good relationship with the people is one of his greatest points because without the people there is no leader. The leader, the president, must have the support of the people and if not he will not stay in power long. The president is not doing a good job of this because of his very unpopular policies. Machiavelli would never choose to just continue on the same path and peruse unpopular policies. "It is necessary for a prince to possess the friendship; otherwise he has no recourse in times of adversity."(p.65) In response to this he would abandon the unpopular policies and concentrate on winning the election, keeping the people happy. Not only should the leader concentrate on the present and the future but consider the past. " The prince ought to read history and study the actions of eminent men, examine the causes of their victories and defeat in order to imitate the former and avoid the latter."(p.82) History is bound to repeat itself if not watched very carefully. The leader must avoid repeating the blunders of the past and take note of the victories preceding him. Another view that would help the president out in his policies would be Machiavelli's view on boldness. The leader is far better of to be bold instead of cautious. If you expect for the worse and be prepared for bad times even if its not the best strategy you will be better off in the long run. "For if it happens that time and circumstances are favourable to one who acts with caution and prudence he will be successful, but if time and circumstances change he will be ruined, because he does not change his mode of procedure."(p. 121) The leader must at all times be prepared for the worst so he does not get caught off guard and make the people mad. If these views of Machiavelli seem straight forward or to direct maybe Leo Strauss or J.G.A. Pocock could explain these methods of leadership to the president. Pocock would elaborate on the subject of historical awareness. He could help the president understand that we have to look to our past to help better ourselves for the future. Strauss on the hand would compare Machiavelli to the greeks and thier writtings. He would go in depth though about how the greeks, Mr. T in particular, were kings in understatements while Machiavelli was very straightforward in his writtings. After presenting these views to the president I hope my knowledge of Machiavelli and his way of thinking could help influence the policies in place and maybe help the president win the up coming election. Maybe after my essay is read and I graduate Southwest Texas with a Political Science degree maybe I could get a job at the White House and someday take over his
